Court grants four-day remand for suspect in Dhaka murder case of Suraiya Akhter Falani

A Dhaka court granted a four-day remand on Monday for Mohammad Roki, a suspect arrested in connection with the murder of Suraiya Akter, also known as Falani, in the capital’s Sabujbagh area. The order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasan Shahadat following a hearing.
The investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Nure Alam Siddiki of Sabujbagh Police Station, had requested that Roki be formally arrested in the case after evidence linked him to the crime. During Monday’s proceedings, Magistrate Al-Biruni Mir formally ordered Roki’s arrest before the remand hearing commenced. The defendant was not represented by legal counsel during the session.
The investigation began after police recovered a severed head and two hands wrapped in plastic near a culvert adjacent to a cattle farm in the Madartek Baganbari area on August 6. Falani’s parents later identified the remains through photographs of the head and tattoos on the arms. The victim was the daughter of Bozlul Bepari from Dhalikandi village in Munshiganj. Sub-Inspector Rashedul Islam filed a murder case against unidentified individuals at Sabujbagh Police Station on the day the body parts were discovered.
Evidence indicates that on the night of August 3, Falani was seen at the Baganbari culvert with several suspects, including those already in custody. Investigators believe the perpetrators lured the victim away from the scene. Security camera footage later captured several suspects returning to the same location shortly after midnight on August 4, without the victim.
Following an analysis of the video footage, police conducted a series of raids last Friday, resulting in the arrest of five individuals, including the victim’s friend, 19-year-old Nusrat Jahan Sahida. The other arrested suspects are Faruk, also known as Jamai Faruk (45), Mohammad Sujon (20), Mohammad Mamun (20), and Mohammad Rafi Islam, alias Bappi (19). These five individuals were remanded for four days each by a Dhaka court this past Saturday.
