Court orders arrest of former lawmaker Amirul Alam Milon in BNP activist murder case

A Dhaka court on Monday ordered the formal arrest of Amirul Alam Milon, a central executive committee member of the Awami League and former lawmaker from the Bagerhat-4 constituency, in connection with the murder of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) activist Mokbul Hossain.
Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam issued the directive following a hearing held at the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court. Sub-Inspector Rukunuzzaman, representing the prosecution, confirmed the judicial order.
The court reached its decision after the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Md Tofazzal Hossain of the Detective Branch (Motijheel Division), submitted a formal plea to have Milon arrested in the murder case. Milon, 72, is listed as the 99th accused in the First Information Report (FIR). Following the court’s ruling, he was ordered to be detained in prison.
The case stems from a violent confrontation on December 10, 2022, when BNP leaders and activists gathered in Naya Paltan to push for a single-point political demand. Tensions had escalated in the area following a police raid on the BNP central office on December 7, 2022. During the ensuing unrest, activist Mokbul Hossain sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
The legal proceedings were initiated on September 30, 2024, when Mahfuzur Rahman filed a case at the Paltan Model Police Station. The complaint names 256 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, alongside 400 to 500 unidentified persons.
Milon has been held in custody since his initial arrest by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch in May 2025.
