Bidisha Siddique arrested by Gulshan police over 2008 fraud conviction

Police in Dhaka arrested Bidisha Siddiq, the former wife of the late President Hussain Muhammad Ershad, on Tuesday evening in connection with a fraud case dating back to 2008.
Officers from the Gulshan Police Station apprehended Bidisha at the Arabica Restaurant in the capital’s Gulshan area at approximately 8:30 p.m. Daud Hossain, the officer-in-charge of the Gulshan Police Station, confirmed the arrest, stating that the action was taken following an outstanding arrest warrant issued after her conviction in a long-standing fraud case.
On May 20, the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam sentenced Bidisha to two years of rigorous imprisonment for fraud related to the sale of an apartment. In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a fine of 10,000 taka, with a stipulation of an additional month in jail should the fine remain unpaid.
The legal proceedings stem from a complaint filed in 2008 by businessman Mosharraf Hossain Sikdar at the Gulshan Police Station. According to court documents, the dispute originated in July 2001 when Bidisha offered to sell a luxury flat in the President Park residential complex in Baridhara to Sikdar. The two parties reached an agreement for the property at a price of 8 million taka.
Sikdar alleged that under instructions from Bidisha, he issued pay orders totaling 7.5 million taka in the name of her associate, Abdul Razzak. Although a formal contract was signed and a handover date for the property was set for July 2002, the complainant asserted that the apartment was never provided.
The legal complaint further detailed that when the buyer pressured the defendant for the property, she eventually issued a check for 7.2 million taka in February 2005. The check was subsequently dishonored by the bank due to insufficient funds. Sikdar further alleged that Bidisha failed to provide the apartment or reimburse the funds, opting instead to employ intimidation tactics to silence the claims.
