Couple escapes arson attack after home locked from outside in Tangail

A couple narrowly escaped a fire at their home in Tangail’s Sakhipur municipality early Saturday after unidentified assailants allegedly locked them inside from the outside and set the structure ablaze.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. in the Gargo-bindapur Ukhariachala area of Ward 6. The victims, Lal Mia and his wife, Mosammat Begum, were awakened by the heat of the fire. Upon discovering that their door had been latched from the outside, the couple managed to escape by cutting through a corrugated tin wall with a cleaver.

Lal Mia sustained burn injuries during the escape and was rushed to the Sakhipur Upazila Health Complex by local residents for emergency treatment.

Speaking on the incident, Lal Mia alleged that the attack was a result of a long-standing land dispute with several neighbors. He reported that the dispute is currently pending in court and claimed he had received death threats just two days prior to the attack.

Neighbors Azmat Ali and his wife, Rukiya, stated that they rushed to the scene after hearing cries for help. They confirmed that the door was secured with a latch from the exterior while the home was engulfed in flames.

Ratan Roy, an official from the Sakhipur Fire Service station, said his team arrived at the scene at 3:20 a.m. after receiving a call via the 999 national emergency hotline. By the time they arrived, the structure had already been destroyed, and responders noted that the emergency services had been alerted significantly late.

Officer-in-Charge of Sakhipur Police Station, Murad Hossain, stated that while no formal complaint has been filed as of yet, authorities are aware of the situation. He added that an investigation is underway and promised that appropriate legal action will be taken against those responsible.
