British-Bangladeshi man shot dead inside vehicle in East London

LONDON — A 40-year-old British-Bangladeshi man, Mashum Ahmed, was shot dead in the Newham area of East London early Tuesday morning. Metropolitan Police officers discovered Ahmed suffering from gunshot wounds inside a vehicle on St. Bartholomew’s Road. Despite efforts by emergency services, including London Ambulance Service and the air ambulance, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was a native of Karikona village in the Bishwanath municipality of Sylhet, Bangladesh, and the eldest son of Mohammad Amir Ali. Having resided in the United Kingdom since childhood, Ahmed leaves behind a young daughter. His father remains in Bangladesh, while other family members reside in the United Kingdom.

According to the victim’s younger brother, Manik Uddin, police arrived at the family’s home at approximately 4:00 a.m. to confirm Ahmed’s identity and inform them of the fatality. Uddin stated that the family has yet to be informed of the motive behind the attack or the identity of the perpetrators. The body remains under police custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Dan Whitten, who is leading the investigation, expressed his condolences to the family and acknowledged the anxiety the incident has caused within the local community. “We are working tirelessly to establish exactly what happened and to identify those responsible,” Whitten said.

Metropolitan Police cordoned off the scene on St. Bartholomew’s Road to conduct a forensic analysis. As of Tuesday evening, no arrests had been made. Detectives have not yet disclosed whether the victim was specifically targeted or if the shooting was a random act of violence.

Authorities have increased patrols in the area and are urging members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or possess relevant information, including dashcam or doorbell camera footage, to contact the police immediately. Witnesses are requested to call 101 or contact the service via the reference number CAD 797/18AUG. Specialized officers have been assigned to support the victim’s family during the ongoing investigation.
