Hundreds of students took to the streets in India, protesting by riding on warplanes and tanks
Violent protests erupted at the Lovely Professional University campus in India's Punjab state, following allegations that a female student was sexually assaulted on the premises. Hundreds of students gathered early Sunday morning, clashing with authorities and engaging in widespread vandalism that saw protesters climbing atop a decommissioned MiG-23 fighter jet and a military tank displayed on campus grounds.
According to student accounts, the alleged assault occurred on September 24 when an outsider reportedly violated a female student inside the campus. Protesters claimed that university authorities, including hostel wardens, failed to take action despite being informed of the incident. As news of the alleged assault spread across the student body, mounting frustration boiled over, leading demonstrators to block the Jalandhar-Phagwara national highway and smash windows and campus storefronts.
In response to the unrest, Lovely Professional University management categorically denied the allegations, issuing statements that characterized the claims circulating on social media as entirely false and fabricated rumors designed to incite unrest.
Law enforcement officials and senior police personnel rushed to the scene to restore order and disperse the crowds. Police confirmed that a formal case has been registered against an unidentified suspect based on a complaint filed by the victim, and a special investigative team has been formed to probe the incident. Authorities reported that the situation is currently under police control as investigations continue.
