Dhaka South City Corporation Launches Automated Traffic Signal Pilot Program at Shahbagh Intersection

The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has launched a pilot project for a modern, automated traffic signaling system at the capital’s Shahbag intersection. DSCC Administrator Md. Abdus Salam inaugurated the system on Thursday as part of an initiative to reduce gridlock and instill greater discipline in vehicular movement across the city.

The infrastructure for the new signaling system was developed with technical assistance from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). According to the DSCC, the project aims to optimize traffic flow through technology-driven automation, ultimately reclaiming the significant man-hours currently lost to congestion.

Administrator Salam stated that the system is designed to streamline traffic management, reducing the reliance on manual signaling by traffic police. The city corporation plans to expand the initiative to 50 additional critical intersections within the next few months, with 22 of those set to be operational in the near future.

While the automated system is intended to improve efficiency, officials emphasized that its success depends heavily on public compliance. Administrator Salam urged motorists and pedestrians to adhere strictly to traffic signals and called for an end to illegal roadside parking. Furthermore, authorities have issued a call for road users to respect lane markings, utilize zebra crossings, and ensure that intersections remain clear of vendors and other obstructions.

The inauguration event was attended by several senior officials, including DSCC Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Md. Mahabubur Rahman Talukdar and Chief Engineer Nur Azizur Rahman. Also in attendance were BUET professors Moazzem Hossain and Muhammad Hadiuzzaman, alongside Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Mohammad Anisur Rahman.
