Amtali Upazila administration returns over 3.7 million taka in unused project funds to state treasury

AMTALI, Barguna — The Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Amtali, Muhammad Jafar Arif Chowdhury, has returned 3,750,540 taka in unspent government funds to the state treasury following the completion of two canal excavation projects. In addition to the dredging, the initiative included the planting of various tree species along the canal banks to improve the local landscape.

The projects were funded by the Department of Disaster Management on April 4 of this year. The allocation included 7,728,842 taka for the excavation of a three-kilometer stretch of the West Kewabunia Canal in Kukuya Union, and 5,153,995 taka for a two-kilometer section of the Pashurbunia Canal in Haldia Union. The total budget for both projects amounted to 12,882,837 taka, involving 397 laborers from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Local residents and farmers have praised the initiative, noting that the restored canals provide a vital source of water for irrigation. Rubel Howlader, a beneficiary in the Kewabunia area, stated that the excavation will benefit approximately 20,000 farmers. He noted that in previous dry seasons, farmers struggled to cultivate crops due to water shortages, a problem that is now expected to be resolved.

Amtali Upazila Project Implementation Officer Runu Begum confirmed that the excavation work was completed in accordance with the directives and work orders issued by the Upazila administration. She verified that the surplus funds were deposited back into the government treasury following the conclusion of the works.

Reflecting on the achievement, UNO Muhammad Jafar Arif Chowdhury described the canal excavation as a significant government initiative and stated that he had worked diligently to ensure its successful implementation.

The efforts of the local administration gained national attention when the Prime Minister’s Office invited 84 UNOs from across the country for a courtesy meeting last Saturday. During the event, Chowdhury briefed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the progress of the projects and the positive impact of the canal excavation on the Amtali region. According to administrative sources, the Prime Minister commended his performance and encouraged his continued commitment to development work.
