Captain Pushes for Mushfiqurs ODI Return, Coach Weighs In

A change in the Bangladesh One-Day International squad is reportedly being driven by captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz, with speculation mounting that veteran batsman Mushfiqur Rahim could be in line for a return to the format.

However, head coach Phil Simmons indicated on Wednesday that Rahim had recently decided to focus solely on Test cricket. Simmons acknowledged Rahim’s significant achievement in reaching 100 Test matches, calling it a “great accomplishment,” and left the door open for future possibilities, stating “we will see what happens in the future.”

Simmons candidly assessed the team’s performance, identifying batting as an area requiring significant improvement across all positions from the top order down to number eight. He highlighted the ongoing efforts to refine this aspect of their play, noting positive progress in the final 10 overs, citing the recent 80 runs scored against Pakistan as an example.

Addressing the situation of Soumya Sarkar, who was on the bench during the most recent series, Simmons described him as a “brilliant player” who had performed well against the West Indies. However, he noted that Sarkar had missed considerable playing time, during which other players in his position had performed effectively. Simmons urged Sarkar to continue his efforts to regain his place.

The coach also touched upon the challenges faced by batsmen who often bat in the top order in domestic competitions but are required to adapt to different batting positions at the international level. He stressed that adaptability to match situations is paramount in international cricket, outweighing past domestic performances.

Mushfiqur Rahim had announced his retirement from ODI cricket following last year’s Champions Trophy. He has since been involved in domestic league play and continued to feature in Test matches for Bangladesh.
