Rare slow loris rescued from madrasa in Durgapur and returned to wild

DURGAPUR, Netrokona — A rare slow loris was rescued from a local religious school in Netrokona’s Durgapur Upazila on Monday evening, following its stray appearance in a residential area.
Members of the volunteer environmental organization Save the Animals of Susang recovered the primate from the Madrashatul Insaf school premises in the Farangpara area. The animal was later released into the Gopalpur hills, located within the upazila, later that night.
Mahmudul Haque, director of the school, stated that teachers and students first spotted the animal navigating the boundary netting of the institution shortly after sunset. The staff safely secured the creature in a cage and alerted the wildlife volunteers, who confirmed the animal was a slow loris.
Word of the unusual discovery quickly spread, drawing crowds of local residents to the school grounds. Rifat Ahmed, president of Save the Animals of Susang, confirmed that the rescue team arrived promptly to assess the animal. Finding the loris in good health, they transported it to the Gopalpur hills for release by 9:00 p.m. Ahmed noted that the animal likely wandered into the locality in search of food and added that his organization has successfully rescued and rehabilitated 16 slow lorises to date.
Durgapur Range Officer Majnu Pramanik stated that the volunteers notified the forest department regarding the recovery. Following official guidance from the department, the primate was returned to its natural habitat. Officials noted that due to the upazila’s proximity to the border, wildlife such as monkeys and pythons frequently stray into human-populated areas.
