Dhaka Court Places MPs Driver on Four-Day Remand Over Wife Suicide Incitement Case

Court grants a four-day remand for the uncle of the victim in the incitement to suicide case involving a Member of Parliament

A Dhaka court on Thursday (October 2) placed Obaidur Rahman on a four-day remand in a case filed over the abetment of suicide of Maryam, the second wife of Member of Parliament Gazi Nazrul Islam.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain passed the order following a hearing after the investigation officer, Detective Branch Inspector Mohammad Salahuddin, submitted a petition seeking a five-day remand for the accused on September 28. Public Prosecutor Harun Or Rashid confirmed the judicial outcome to the media.

During the remand proceedings, state counsels argued that Obaidur Rahman, who also served as the lawmaker's driver and is the maternal uncle of the deceased, was allegedly linked to the release of certain video footage involving the primary accused, Gazi Nazrul, which reportedly triggered the tragic events. Prosecutors emphasized that Obaidur acted as a witness to the marriage and the marriage registry, asserting that custodial interrogation was essential to determine whether he had any direct complicity or incitement in the death.

Conversely, defense counsel Golam Saber prayed for the cancellation of the remand plea and sought bail for the accused. The defense contended that Obaidur was not only a driver but also the victim's maternal uncle, who had actually protested the marital arrangement. The defense further claimed that Obaidur was maliciously implicated out of vendetta because he had previously filed an attempted murder case against the primary accused and others, maintaining that the 19-year-old victim faced mental torture exclusively from the first and second accused individuals.

According to the case dossier, the tragic incident unfolded on the evening of September 20, when police recovered the hanging body of 19-year-old Maryam from a flat in the NAM Bhaban complex opposite the Jatiya Sangsad. Law enforcement detained MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife, Maksuda Islam, on the same night, subsequent to which the victim's father, S M Masum Billah, lodged a case accusing them of abetting suicide.

Principal accused Gazi Nazrul Islam is currently behind bars following two rounds of remand totaling eight days, while his first wife, Maksuda Islam, secured bail on Wednesday (October 1) after a one-day remand. On the same day, the court rejected a bail petition for the lawmaker alongside a compromise deed submitted by the plaintiff and the victim's family, and authorities had initially arrested Obaidur Rahman on September 23 through the Special Response Battalion-2 before confining him to jail.
