A fight with a friend at night, the hanging body of the imam of the mosque was recovered in the morning
Police in Kishoreganj’s Katiadi upazila have recovered the hanging body of a mosque imam, hours after a violent altercation involving his close friend. The body of 25-year-old Shamim, who served as the imam at a mosque in Char-Jhakalia village, was discovered by locals on Monday morning in a room adjacent to the mosque.
The incident follows a late-night confrontation between Shamim and his friend, 24-year-old Sohan Mia, on Sunday. According to local residents, the two men had spent the evening together before retiring to the imam’s quarters after 10:00 p.m. Neighbors reported hearing a commotion around 1:30 a.m. and discovered Sohan severely injured with visible neck wounds. While Sohan alleged that Shamim had attacked him, he provided no explanation for the motive. Witnesses stated that Shamim, who remained at the scene, acknowledged the altercation but similarly offered no clarification regarding the cause of the dispute.
Sohan was initially transported to the Katiadi Upazila Health Complex before being transferred to Zahurul Islam Medical College Hospital and subsequently to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Authorities have confirmed that Sohan remains hospitalized and has yet to provide a formal statement to investigators.
The discovery of Shamim’s body the following morning has prompted a police investigation into the circumstances of his death. Officers recovered the body, which was found hanging from a rope, and dispatched it to Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital in Kishoreganj for an autopsy. The mosque’s management committee expressed shock at the sudden loss of the imam, who had served the community for several years.
Katiadi Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rafiqul Islam stated that law enforcement is working to determine the precise cause of death and the nature of the conflict between the two friends. Meanwhile, the victim's father, Farid Mia, has rejected the possibility of suicide, asserting that there are unexplained factors surrounding his son’s death that warrant a thorough investigation.
