Youth wing leaders expelled in Bangladesh following fatal beating of union official

Police in Mymensingh’s Gouripur have launched a murder investigation following the death of Manik Mia, a former local transport union leader who succumbed to injuries sustained during a brutal beating earlier this week. Mia’s wife, Sumaiya Akter, filed a formal complaint Thursday night naming eight individuals and several unidentified suspects in connection with the attack.

The victim, a 40-year-old palanquin driver and former vice president of the local transport workers’ union, was intercepted by a group led by Shoeb Munshi, an assistant general secretary of the Mymensingh North District Jubo Dal, near the local bus stand on Tuesday night. According to family members, the assailants abducted Mia and transported him to a residence in the West Dapunia area, where they subjected him to severe, repeated physical abuse.

The victim’s family alleges that the attackers summoned Akter to the scene of the assault and coerced her into recording a video statement on her mobile phone claiming that her husband was a drug dealer. Following this, the assailants released the critically injured man to his wife. Mia was initially rushed to the Gouripur Upazila Health Complex before being transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Medical reports indicate that Mia died from excessive internal bleeding caused by extensive trauma, including multiple fractures to his legs and thighs. Mia’s brother, Sukh Mia, attributed the violence to a long-standing land dispute between the victim and Munshi’s associates.

In response to the incident, the Nationalist Jubo Dal central executive committee issued a statement confirming the expulsion of Shoeb Munshi, citing his involvement in criminal activities that contradict the party’s principles. Additionally, the Mymensingh North District unit of the Chhatra Dal announced the expulsion of two other leaders—Al Imran Khan and Rifat Hasan—on similar charges of involvement in the homicide.

Gouripur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Habibur Rahman confirmed that a case has been registered against the accused. While no arrests had been made as of Friday morning, authorities stated that police operations are ongoing to locate and apprehend the suspects. Both the Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal leaderships have formally distanced themselves from the accused, stating that the party will not condone criminal behavior and urging law enforcement to take swift legal action.
