Woman dies in Coxs Bazar landslide amid heavy seasonal rainfall

A 34-year-old woman was killed late Saturday night when a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall buried her home in the Jhilongja Union of Cox’s Bazar. The victim, Rozina Akter, was inside the kitchen of her residence in the Chandrima Jhirjhiripara area when a portion of an adjacent 45-foot-high hill collapsed onto the structure at approximately 9:30 p.m.
While her husband, Mujibur Rahman, and their three young children were also trapped by the debris, local residents were able to reach them and pull them to safety. However, they were unable to extricate Akter. Emergency services were alerted via the 999 national hotline, prompting two units from the Cox’s Bazar Fire Service and Civil Defence to initiate a rescue operation.

Fire service personnel spent 90 minutes clearing the earth before recovering Akter’s body. According to Syed Mohammad Morshed Alam, deputy assistant director of the local fire service, the victim had been trapped under the soil for a significant duration, preventing her from breathing. She was rushed to the Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Sheikh Mohammad Ali, officer-in-charge of the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, confirmed that the region had been experiencing persistent, heavy monsoon rains throughout the day. Officials noted that despite repeated warnings and public announcements urging residents in the hilly terrain to relocate to safer areas, many remain in high-risk zones, refusing to abandon their homes.

This tragedy marks the second fatal landslide in the region this month. On July 7, 25-year-old Lima Akter was killed in a similar landslide in the nearby Boro Chhora hill area of Hazighona, which also left her husband, Jasim Uddin, with severe injuries. Authorities continue to emphasize the precarious nature of these settlements as the monsoon season intensifies.
