Witness testifies to fatal gunshot wound in trial over killing of police officer’s son during July uprising

A witness testified Sunday before International Crimes Tribunal-2, providing harrowing details regarding the death of Imam Hasan Taim, a student killed during the July mass uprising in Dhaka. The witness, Haidar Bin Chhad, stated that upon washing the body of the 18-year-old victim, he discovered a large puncture wound on the left side of the teenager’s lower back, consistent with a pistol shot.
Taim, a twelfth-grade student at Adamjinagar MW College in Narayanganj, was killed on July 20, 2024, near the Kazla pedestrian bridge in the capital’s Jatrabari area. His father, Md. Moinul Hossain Bhuiyan, serves as a sub-inspector at the Rajarbagh Police Lines.

According to the testimony, the victim’s body was handed over to family members on the afternoon of July 21. Haidar, who is a relative of the victim’s mother, accompanied the family to the Rajarbagh Police Lines mosque to prepare the body for burial. While performing the ritual cleansing, Haidar and the mosque’s imam observed the significant wound. They subsequently alerted the victim’s father and two other police officers, who concluded that the injury was likely caused by a firearm.
Following the testimony, Haidar demanded justice for the killing, calling for the prosecution of the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the former Home Minister, and all others implicated in the violence.

The legal proceedings involve 11 defendants, including high-ranking former officials of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. While the former Officer-in-Charge of Jatrabari Police Station, Abul Hasan, and former sub-inspector Md. Shahadat Ali were present in court, nine other suspects remain at large. The fugitives include former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, and several other former divisional and assistant commissioners associated with the Wari and Demra regions.
