Jahed Ur Rahman said that various initiatives have been taken to solve the energy crisis. It will take time to reap the benefits. According to him, we are not saying that we will do everything overnight. It will take at least two years to get to good or much better fuel economy.”
Information and Broadcasting Adviser Zaheed Ur Rahman said this in response to the questions of journalists at the exchange meeting organized on the occasion of Nazrul Barsh celebrations at Mymensingh Zilla Parishad’s Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Auditorium. The meeting was organized with the aim of smoothly implementing the departmental level cultural competition with the participation of primary, technical and secondary school students across the country.
Regarding the energy crisis, Zaheed Ur Rahman said that the people of the country are in a lot of trouble. The Prime Minister himself has expressed regret about this. The suffering of the people is real, but it is not right to blame the current government alone for it. The current crisis is the result of problems that have been accumulating for a long time. Pointing out that the crisis has become more pronounced due to the recent accident, he said that even if the two plants closed due to the accident are reopened, there will still be a shortfall of about 100 crore cubic feet in gas supply compared to demand. This deficit has been building for a long time.
The advisor said that the government has taken various short, medium and long term measures to deal with the energy crisis, and a plant has been ordered quickly after the gasification plant accident. Initiatives are being taken to bring two more plants as backup. However, the implementation of these measures will take time. He said that efforts are being made to increase the use of solar power. Initiatives are being taken to bring Bhola gas to the mainland. Besides, efforts are being made to buy LNG. Ground gas exploration has also started. Based on the survey, it is estimated that there is a potential of 40 to 50 trillion cubic feet of gas in the land of the country. Now the work has begun. Two new rigs have already been purchased. Efforts are underway to keep the existing rigs active. Quick steps are being taken on coal too.
Zaheed Ur Rahman also highlighted the uncertainty of the international market. He said, the LNG market is currently very uncertain. There is a war going on in the Middle East, which could turn into a full-scale war at any time. The situation could be further complicated if a crisis develops over fuel transportation in the Straits of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb. He emphasized on increasing the use of solar power as an initiative that can be implemented quickly. According to him, it has been decided to install solar power in every government facility. Private institutions are also being encouraged in this regard.
Regarding the criticism of the opposition party, the advisor said that it is normal for the opposition party to criticize the government. However, people can reject the program if it is unnecessary or unreasonable and causes public suffering. The Parliament session is scheduled to begin on August 27. Parliament is the best place for the opposition to point out the government’s mistakes. There is an opportunity to point out the mistakes of the government with arguments as well as to give credible advice.
