Water Resources Minister Announces Approval of Padma Barrage Project to Boost Southwestern Regional Development

Water Resources Minister Md. Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee announced that the government has officially approved the Padma Barrage project, a strategic initiative aimed at transforming the economy, agriculture, and livelihoods of the people in the country’s southwestern region. Speaking on the progress of national water infrastructure, the minister also expressed optimism regarding the Teesta Master Plan, noting that it is expected to receive formal approval soon, pending the final recommendations from technical experts.
The minister made these remarks on Tuesday while addressing a national seminar titled “Equitable Socio-Economic Development and Achieving SDGs 3, 5, 6, and 10,” held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Center in Dhaka. The event, which focused on providing guidelines for implementing a five-year strategic framework, was organized by the Planning Commission.
Highlighting the country’s vulnerability to climate change, Minister Anee emphasized that Bangladesh continues to face significant risks from floods, river erosion, cyclones, droughts, waterlogging, and soil salinity. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to establishing a safe, inclusive, and climate-resilient water management system for future generations. The minister further stated that the government is actively working toward building a prosperous and habitable nation through collaborative efforts and strategic partnerships.
The panel discussion during the seminar was chaired by Professor Mustafizur Rahman, a distinguished fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD). Member of Parliament Anna Minj attended the session as the guest of honor. Other notable participants in the discussion included WaterAid Bangladesh Director Partha Hefaz Shaikh, Naripokkho Director Kamrun Nahar, and UNICEF Bangladesh Program Officer Saifur Rahman.
