Village Vigilantes Torch Suspect Home After Fatal Stabbing in Rajshahi

A 40-year-old woman was fatally stabbed in her home in Harian Purba Para village, located in the Paba upazila of Rajshahi, on Friday evening. The victim, Farida Khatun, was the wife of a local village police officer, Lalon Sheikh. Her son, Md. Faysal, sustained serious injuries while attempting to intervene and is currently receiving treatment at the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. According to witnesses, the violence erupted following a dispute earlier in the day regarding allegations against a neighbor’s son, 18-year-old Porash. Farida Khatun’s mother-in-law, Basia Begum, stated that the confrontation began when she and the victim discussed reports of Porash’s alleged involvement in a prior altercation. Upon hearing the discussion, Porash and his mother, Poli Khatun, reportedly confronted the victims, leading to the fatal stabbing.

Following the attack, enraged villagers set fire to the home of the accused. Local residents noted that the family had abandoned the property immediately after the incident. By Saturday morning, the residence remained empty, with smoke still rising from a room on the second floor.
Harian Union Parishad acting chairman Saber Ali confirmed the details of the incident, noting that the perpetrators fled the area before police arrived. As reported by the local press, the victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, and her body was held at the morgue for further examination.

Rajshahi Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Gaziur Rahman confirmed that a murder case has been filed at the Katakhali police station by the victim’s husband, Lalon Sheikh. While no arrests have been made as of Saturday, officials identified the primary suspect, Porash, as a repeat offender with a prior criminal record involving narcotics. Police continue to investigate the motive and the whereabouts of the accused.
