Velabaich competition in Jahangirnagar, winners get swans, chickens and pigeons

On the occasion of Chaitra Sankranti, the traditional Velabaich competition was held in Jahangirnagar University. This was organized by Jahangirnagar University Central Student Council (JAKSU) at around 12 noon on Monday at Rang Pond, which is adjacent to the old Kala Bhavan of the university.

According to Jaksu sources, such arrangements are made to introduce rural traditions to the new generation. The event was inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor of the University Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan. Deans and teachers of various faculties including Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Sohail Ahmed, Vice-Chancellor (Education) Mahfuzur Rahman were present at this time.

The organizers said that this competition was organized for the first time in the university with special rafts made of cut banana trees, bamboo kanchi and ropes. 22 students of 11 student halls participated in it.

Shaheed Salam-Barkat Hall became the first in the competition by crossing the prescribed distance of 2 minutes and 35 seconds. The second Nawab Salimullah Hall took 3 minutes 5 seconds and the third AFM Kamaluddin Hall covered the prescribed distance in 3 minutes 10 seconds. The first place team in the competition was awarded a swan and the second and third place winners were awarded a domestic chicken and a pair of pigeons respectively.

Hundreds of students and visitors thronged around Rang Pond to enjoy Velabych. They expressed their excitement about such an arrangement. Tauhid Siam, a student of the International Relations Department, said, “We are very happy to organize such a traditional event in the university. Rural traditions must be preserved, otherwise they may be lost someday.’

Thanking Jaksu for such an arrangement, Al Mamun, a student of the first team, said, ‘Our hall is the first to participate in this Velabaich organized for the first time in the university. It is a great joy and pride.’
