US Pacific Fleet Commander Meets Prime Minister to Strengthen Regional Security Ties

Admiral Steve Koehler, commander of the United States Pacific Fleet, met with Prime Minister Tareq Rahman in Dhaka on Tuesday to discuss deepening bilateral cooperation and strengthening regional security. The meeting, held at the Cabinet Division of the Bangladesh Secretariat, served as a platform for both nations to reaffirm their commitment to an expanded strategic partnership.
According to the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka, the discussions centered on identifying new opportunities to bolster regional stability and security. Prime Minister Rahman’s deputy press secretary, Shahadat Swadhin, noted that the dialogue also covered humanitarian assistance and Bangladesh’s ongoing contributions to disaster management. During the meeting, the Prime Minister recalled the historical significance of Operation Sea Angel, the U.S.-led humanitarian mission launched following the devastating 1991 cyclone in Bangladesh.
The collaboration between the two nations is set to continue through upcoming maritime exercises. Admiral Koehler highlighted Bangladesh’s participation in various naval drills and confirmed that Bangladesh will host the Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) exercise this November. CARAT is a series of bilateral and multilateral naval drills conducted annually by the U.S. Pacific Fleet across South and Southeast Asia, involving partners such as Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Sri Lanka.
Beyond CARAT, the officials discussed Bangladesh’s involvement in the Sea Vision exercise in Singapore and the Admiral expressed a strong desire for Bangladesh to participate regularly in future “Rim of the Pacific” (RIMPAC) maritime training programs. The talks also touched upon the progress of the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA), a specialized defense pact currently under negotiation between the two countries.
Prime Minister Rahman underscored that Bangladesh places great importance on its relationship with the United States, expressing a desire to modernize and broaden the scope of this partnership. Admiral Koehler noted the vast potential for joint efforts, praising Bangladesh’s significant contributions to United Nations peacekeeping missions across Africa. He expressed optimism that the bilateral relationship would continue to flourish, while the Prime Minister reiterated that Bangladesh remains steadfast in its commitment to global peace.
The meeting was also attended by the Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Advisor, Humayun Kabir, and the Prime Minister’s Defense Advisor, Brigadier General (Ret.) A.K.M. Shamsul Islam.
