UN Secretary-General appoints Bangladeshi diplomat Rabab Fatima to lead Afghanistan mission

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced on Wednesday the appointment of veteran Bangladeshi diplomat Rabab Fatima as the new head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

Fatima, who previously served as Bangladesh’s permanent representative to the United Nations, brings over 30 years of experience in national and international civil service to the role. Her career has spanned bilateral and multilateral diplomacy, encompassing policy development, advocacy, and the complex implementation of international programs. She currently serves as the UN’s High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States.

In her new capacity, Fatima will succeed Canada’s Georgette Gagnon, who has been serving as the acting head of the mission.

Established in 2002, UNAMA remains a critical international presence in Afghanistan, particularly following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. The mission is tasked with coordinating humanitarian aid, facilitating political dialogue, and monitoring the country’s precarious human rights situation.

The appointment comes as the mission navigates a complicated geopolitical landscape. Although the United States has previously expressed reservations regarding the mission’s scope and operational methodologies, the UN Security Council voted to extend UNAMA’s mandate for another year this past June, underscoring its continued role as a focal point for international engagement in the region.
