Jahangirnagar University student handed to police over social media posts mocking July uprising

Jahangirnagar University authorities handed a student over to the Ashulia police on Wednesday following allegations that he made derogatory remarks on social media regarding the July mass uprising. The student, Sharafat Sharik (Rohan), is enrolled in the university’s archaeology department as a member of the 54th batch.
The incident unfolded at the Sher-e-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Huq Hall, where student leaders confronted Sharik after identifying two posts on his personal Facebook account that allegedly insulted participants of the July movement. Following a brief period of interrogation by hall representatives, the student was escorted to the proctor’s office as a crowd of students and activists gathered to monitor the situation.
During questioning at the proctor’s office, Sharik denied any political affiliation or external influence regarding his posts. He claimed his intent was to articulate a personal stance on the country’s War of Liberation, rather than to target the recent protest movement. He expressed regret for his choice of language, admitting that the specific terms used were inappropriate. Furthermore, while he denied any connection to the Bangladesh Chhatra League, he acknowledged a personal belief in the ideals of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Assistant Proctor Abdus Sattar confirmed that the administration chose to hand the student over to law enforcement due to the inflammatory nature of the remarks. Sattar stated that a legal case is pending against the student and that the university has initiated the formation of an internal investigative committee to determine further disciplinary measures under institutional regulations.
