US Ambassador Brent Christensen Praises Natural Beauty and Cultural Heritage During Barishal Visit

United States Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen has expressed admiration for the natural landscape and cultural heritage of Barishal, often referred to as the “Venice of Bengal,” during a two-day official visit to the region.
Accompanied by his wife, Diane Dow, the Ambassador began his second day in the region with a visit to the floating guava market and orchards in Jhalokathi’s Bhimruli area. Following the tour, Christensen visited the historic Miabari Mosque in Barishal Sadar Upazila. Constructed in the 18th century, the mosque impressed the envoy with its distinct architectural and archaeological significance.
At the invitation of Information and Broadcasting Minister Zohir Uddin Swapon, the Ambassador and his family later embarked on a river cruise along the Kirtankhola and Sugandha rivers. The three-hour excursion aboard the vessel MV M Khan provided an opportunity for the delegation to observe the local waterway-centric lifestyle.
Reflecting on his experiences, Ambassador Christensen noted that the integration of river life and vibrant floating commerce was a unique observation. He highlighted that the interconnected canal system and the resilience of the local community added a unique dimension to the region’s aesthetic appeal.
During the cruise, officials briefed the Ambassador on the historical significance of the Barishal river port. Established during the Mughal era as Giri-i-Bandar—a hub for the trade of salt, spices, and timber—the facility was formally designated as Barishal Port in 1876 during the British colonial period. The Ambassador expressed significant interest in the maritime history and toured the port facilities.
Minister Zohir Uddin Swapon emphasized the enduring partnership between the United States and Bangladesh, noting that the U.S. remains a vital destination for Bangladeshi readymade garment exports and a key development collaborator. The Minister expressed optimism that the Ambassador’s visit would provide a comprehensive understanding of the geographic and natural landscape of the region.
Representatives from the Barishal Press Club, including President Aminul Islam and General Secretary SM Zakir Hossain, welcomed the delegation and presented them with tokens of local artisanal handicrafts.
The Ambassador is scheduled to conclude his visit on Monday. His itinerary includes a morning visit to a Catholic church in Gournadi, where he is expected to engage with interfaith leaders, followed by a luncheon at the Information Minister’s residence before his departure.
