UN Pledges Continued Support for Bangladesh Development

DHAKA – The United Nations’ Resident Coordinator, Carol Flore-Smereczniak, reaffirmed the organization’s enduring partnership with Bangladesh, pledging comprehensive assistance and cooperation for the nation’s development during a courtesy call with Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman on Wednesday at Army Headquarters.

The meeting marked Flore-Smereczniak’s first formal interaction with the Army Chief since his assumption of duties on March 23. The details of the discussion were reported on the Bangladesh Army’s verified Facebook page.

During the meeting, the UN Resident Coordinator lauded the Bangladesh Army’s longstanding and significant contributions to UN peacekeeping operations, as well as its unwavering commitment to maintaining global peace and stability. She particularly highlighted the Army’s crucial role amidst the various challenges currently confronting UN peacekeeping missions worldwide.

Flore-Smereczniak paid profound tribute to peacekeepers who made the ultimate sacrifice under the UN flag, specifically remembering those killed in the Abey region in December 2025.

She further underscored Bangladesh’s pivotal role in advancing the ‘Women, Peace and Security’ agenda through the notable deployment of a significant number of women peacekeepers across various UN missions. Additionally, she commended the professional dedication of the Bangladesh Army in upholding internal security since July 2024.

Reiterating the United Nations’ continued partnership in Bangladesh’s development and progress, Flore-Smereczniak assured General Zaman of comprehensive support and cooperation from various UN agencies for the country’s overall advancement.
