Udichi Artists Group Commemorates Cultural Icon Kamal Lohani on Sixth Death Anniversary

Cultural activists and admirers gathered in Dhaka on Saturday to commemorate the life and legacy of Kamal Lohani, the venerable language movement veteran, liberation war organizer, and stalwart of Bangladesh’s cultural movement, on the sixth anniversary of his death. The memorial event, held at the central office of the Udichi Shilpi Gosthi, honored a figure whose lifetime of activism left an indelible mark on the nation’s socio-political landscape.
Presided over by Udichi’s acting president Habibul Alam, the event featured tributes from prominent cultural figures, including National Poetry Council president Mohan Rayhan and various members of Udichi’s central executive committee. Speakers reflected on Lohani’s profound courage, noting that he was among the daring activists who stood in defiant protest when the Pakistani government attempted to ban the works of Rabindranath Tagore during the Language Movement.

Participants also recalled Lohani’s vital role during the 1971 Liberation War, specifically his contributions to the Shadhin Bangla Betar Kendra, the clandestine radio station that served as a heartbeat for the nation’s independence struggle. Beyond his historical contributions, speakers lauded him as a guiding force for Udichi, asserting that his influence continues to shape the organization’s direction and ideological path today.
The evening was punctuated by artistic tributes to his memory, featuring solo performances by Humaira Tasin, Maria Antara, and Advay Sanyal Arya, alongside choral performances by Udichi’s music department and a poetry recitation by Nazmul Azad. The memorial service was moderated by Rumi Provha.
