Two workers die following electrical fire at Chittagong salt factory

Two workers have died and eight others remain hospitalized following a devastating fire at a salt factory in Boalkhali, Chittagong. The blaze, which broke out Thursday morning at the Confidence Salt Company, claimed the lives of 45-year-old Mohammad Nurul Alam and 32-year-old Didarul Alam while they were receiving treatment at the Chittagong Medical College (CMC) Hospital.

The incident occurred at approximately 10 a.m. in the West Gomdandi area of the Boalkhali municipality. According to local police, the fire was triggered by an electrical short circuit while workers were conducting welding operations within the facility. The flames quickly spread to nearby stacks of paper, engulfing the area and leaving 10 employees with severe burn injuries.

Medical staff at the CMC Hospital burn unit confirmed that Nurul Alam succumbed to his injuries at 8:30 p.m., followed by Didarul Alam at 9:00 p.m. Hospital officials noted that while emergency care remains ongoing for the surviving victims, the condition of three laborers remains critical.

The victims who sustained injuries include Ujjal Das, Mohammad Litton, Sirajul Islam, Jahidul Alam, Jahid Hossain, Noor Nabi, Mahmudul Haque, and Salim Uddin. These workers, hailing from various regions across Chittagong, were transported to the hospital immediately following the rescue operation.

Boalkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mozaffar Hossain stated that despite the intensity of the fire, it was brought under control swiftly. Representatives from Confidence Salt Company have pledged to cover the full cost of medical treatment for the injured employees as they continue to coordinate with authorities regarding the workplace safety incident.
