Two autorickshaw drivers injured in Lohagara firing by terrorists
Two battery-operated autorickshaw drivers were injured in firing at Lohagara in Chittagong. The families of the injured claimed that the two were shot dead by members of a local terrorist group for non-payment. The incident took place in Amir Baperpara area of Haridar Ghona village of Barahatia union of the upazila at around seven o’clock yesterday evening.
The two injured are Shah Alam’s son Qayyum Sharif (19) of Baraghona area of Chunti union of the upazila and his friend Hamid Hossain’s son of New Para area of Barahatia union. Aqib (20). Currently they are under treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Akib’s cousin Md. Emon told Prothom Alo that a local terrorist group demanded 20,000 taka from Akib. Akib gave some money. However, the terrorists were angry with Aqib for not paying all the demanded money. He was shot because of this. Md. Eman also said that around seven in the evening yesterday, Akib and his friend Qayyum went to the area with passengers in an autorickshaw. The terrorists who were already there shot at them and fled to the mountains. Hearing the gunshots, the local residents rescued the two and took them to the hospital.
According to local residents, two terrorist groups have been active in the area for almost a decade. These two groups often demand donations from various people including businessmen, rich people of the area. If they refused to pay the subscription, they were attacked. No one speaks openly against them out of fear of local residents too.
Abdullah Al Fahim, a doctor in the emergency department of Lohagara Upazila Health Complex, told Prothom Alo that Akib and Qayyum were brought to the hospital at around 8:30 pm. Bullets hit different parts of their bodies. They were sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for better treatment at night.
Prashant Kumar Bhowmik, OC (Investigation) of Lohagara Police Station, told Prothom Alo on Tuesday morning that the police visited the spot after receiving the information. No one has yet filed a written complaint in the police station. The incident will be investigated and necessary legal action will be taken.
