Three-year-old child dies of respiratory distress in remote Sajek village

A three-year-old child died from respiratory complications on Wednesday evening in the remote village of Tolchara, located in the Sajek Union of Rangamati’s Baghaichhari upazila. The victim, identified as Jayanta Chakma, was the son of local resident Samiran Chakma.

The death underscores the severe humanitarian challenges facing residents of the border region. According to Parichay Chakma, a member of the Sajek Union Parishad’s 5th Ward, the village’s extreme geographic isolation prevented the toddler from accessing any form of medical intervention.

The village, situated near the Mizoram border, remains disconnected from basic infrastructure. In addition to a total lack of mobile network coverage, the area is accessible only by foot, making timely emergency travel to a healthcare facility impossible for local families.

Dr. Bishwajit Dash, a medical officer at the Baghaichhari Upazila Health Complex, confirmed that while the health facility had not received formal notification of the incident, the region’s topography remains a significant barrier to the delivery of government-mandated medical services.
