Three Bangladeshi athletes complete Ironman 70.3 challenge in Malaysia

Three Bangladeshi athletes successfully completed the Ironman 70.3 endurance race in Desaru Coast, Malaysia, on Sunday, marking another milestone for the country’s growing presence in international triathlon competition. The grueling event required participants to complete a 1.9-kilometer swim, a 90-kilometer cycle, and a 21.1-kilometer run within an eight-and-a-half-hour window.
Bangladesh’s most experienced triathlete, Mohammad Samsuzzaman Arafat, led the trio with a stellar performance, finishing the race in 4 hours, 44 minutes, and 4 seconds. Arafat, a joint director at Bangladesh Bank, secured ninth place in his 35-39 age group out of 66 competitors and ranked 29th among the 406 total finishers. Having completed eleven full-distance Ironman races and now nine 70.3 events, Arafat expressed satisfaction at seeing the sport gain mainstream traction in Bangladesh, noting that his next objective is to complete a full-distance Ironman in under ten hours.

Joining him in the accomplishment was triathlon coach Md. Sajjad Hossain, who clocked a time of 4 hours, 50 minutes, and 29 seconds. Competing in the 25-29 age category, Hossain placed sixth among 39 participants and 36th overall. This successful outing serves as a significant recovery for Hossain, who had previously been unable to complete the course during an event in Colombo.
Businessman Fatin Al Farabi also crossed the finish line, recording a time of 6 hours, 29 minutes, and 12 seconds. Farabi, who previously completed an Ironman 70.3 in Langkawi, placed 45th in his 35-39 age group and 269th overall.

The competition was won by Yevgeniy Tikhonin of Kyrgyzstan, who dominated the course with a time of 3 hours, 49 minutes, and 36 seconds. Australian athlete Jade Radbone took second place at 3 hours, 57 minutes, and 29 seconds, followed by Kyrgyzstan’s Ilya Kosov, who secured third with a time of 4 hours, 3 minutes, and 49 seconds.
