The number of sick students increased to 53 due to bad smell in the school, investigation committee formed
10 more students have been admitted to the hospital due to foul smell from Kouta in Muladuli High School of Ishwardi Upazila in Pabna. They were brought to the hospital on Wednesday night. With this, the number of students who received treatment at the hospital stood at 53.
As the condition of two of the sick students deteriorated, they were sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital last night. However, doctors say that everyone is safe.

Meanwhile, the upazila administration has summoned the in-charge health and family planning officer of the upazila and constituted a five-member investigation committee in this incident. The committee has been asked to submit its report within the next three days.
Yesterday afternoon, while classes were going on in the school, a smell started emanating from a toilet in the toilet. First, two students fell ill. After that, the number of sick students gradually increased. At one point, about 40 students fell ill. Later, the fire service personnel went and rescued the sick students and admitted them to Iswardi Upazila Health Complex. Most of them were suffering from respiratory problems. Many were fainting from panic.

According to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex sources, most of the 43 students who were admitted with illness yesterday have been discharged with first aid. Among the sick students, class 10 students Ankhi Akhtar and Ritu Khatun were taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in the night when their physical condition deteriorated. In the night, 10 more students came to the hospital. They are being treated. Most of the admitted students came to the hospital with respiratory problems. Many were panicking and fainting. But now everyone is safe.
Kaveri Saha, the health officer in charge of Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex, said, “We are looking at the matter very seriously. Initially it appears to be “Mass Psychogenic Illness”. It is basically a mental condition, where a student is sick and fear and panic others will also experience the same symptoms. However, we are also considering the issue of blood and other sample tests of the students.
According to upazila administration sources, the upazila administration and police visited the school after the incident. They seized a kota from the school. Kouta is believed to be a ‘lice killer’ spray.
When asked about this, Ishwardi Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Hasan Mohammad Shoaib told Prothom Alo, “I am talking to school teachers, eyewitness students and doctors. The matter is being looked at seriously. An inquiry committee has been formed. If there is any negligence or incitement behind it in the investigation report, then strict action will be taken.
Meanwhile, student attendance at Muladooley High School has dropped since the incident. Fear and panic are working among the students. SM Sultan Mahmud, assistant teacher of the school, said that currently the teaching of the school has been temporarily relaxed and counseling arrangements are being considered to increase the morale of the students.
