Death of man after suspected overdose sparks hospital protest in Dhaka

A 23-year-old man died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka’s Shyamoli neighborhood late Sunday night, prompting a volatile confrontation between the victim’s family and medical staff.
The victim, identified as Ad-Din, had initially fallen ill after consuming sleeping pills. According to local police, family members first transported him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for emergency care. After receiving initial treatment, he was discharged and returned home, but his condition deteriorated shortly thereafter.

Ad-Din was subsequently rushed to City Care, a private facility in Shyamoli, and admitted to the intensive care unit. Despite the efforts of the medical team, he succumbed to his condition while under observation.
Following his death, grieving relatives gathered at the hospital and accused the medical staff of negligence, leading to an attempt to attack the facility’s employees. The situation was eventually brought under control after police arrived at the scene.

Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mezbah Uddin confirmed the incident, noting that the family has formally alleged that medical malpractice contributed to the young man’s death. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
