The colorful motifs of Baisakhi festival are being created by the hands of mothers and children in Gazipur

The first Baisakh will be celebrated on Tuesday. Around this festival of Bengali life, the whole country is dressed up. The colors of that festival are in the mother and child rehabilitation center ‘Sishupalli Plus’ located in Tengra village of Sripur upazila of Gazipur. Mothers and children sheltered at this center, founded by British citizen Patricia Anne Viviana Carr, are now busy creating Boishakhi motifs.
A festive atmosphere was seen at the rehabilitation center on Monday morning. There mothers are making Baisakhi motifs with skillful hands. The children are watching it with eager eyes. Some are painting the motifs made by their mother with raw hand paints, mixing the sweetness of their hearts. Royal Bengal tiger, folk birds, colorful kites, fish, owls, peacocks are being made as motifs for this year’s Baisakhi event. 70 children of third to fifth grade of primary school and their mothers are directly participating in this program inside the institution. The entire project is being led by Milan Robb, Creative Art Director of the company.
Sita Hajda, who is busy making motifs, said that while working, she is also teaching her son Subrata Saren. Little Subrata says in an excited voice, ‘We will have a lot of fun on Baisakh. We will go to the rally with these. Next year I will learn to make these myself. Shahana Begum, another mother, said, “We learned these things from Milan Rob. Now it feels so good to do them with the child. This is the one day in a year that we take great joy with our children.’
Shishupalli Plus has undertaken various programs on the occasion of Baisakh. The festival day will begin after sunrise with a colorful rally. After that everyone will be served breakfast with panta-rui fish according to tradition. The main annual program will start from 9 am, where children will present their own cultural performances. After lunch, there is an opportunity for children to visit the nearby fairs.
In this regard, Creative Art Director Milan Rob said, ‘Here every child grows up with a gentle form of Bangladesh. They continue to learn the traditional forms of contemporary Bengal through these motifs and cultural arrangements. We are basically doing the job of introducing them to the beauty of the native culture. Like every year, this spontaneous participation of mothers and children will give a different dimension to the Boishakhi festival.
Shishupalli Plus, a rehabilitation center for distressed mothers and underprivileged children, was established in 1989 in Tengra village of Sreepur, Gazipur. It is also a shelter for nameless orphans. British woman Patricia Ann Viviana Carr is the founder. At present there are about 650 mothers and children in this large institution. There mothers are established in the society through career oriented education. School education is provided inside Shishupalli Plus to the sheltered children. Patricia, the founder of Shishupalli Plus, was granted Bangladeshi citizenship a few years ago.
