Gazipur police officer withdrawn over corruption allegations involving detainee release

Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) has withdrawn Sub-Inspector Kamrul Hasan from the Konabari Police Station following allegations that he accepted a bribe to release a local political leader. The officer was reassigned to the GMP headquarters on Sunday afternoon after a preliminary internal investigation corroborated claims of professional misconduct.

The controversy centers on a police operation conducted on the night of June 22 in the Pratapbpur area. During the raid, SI Kamrul Hasan and his team apprehended Matin Mia, the president of the 10th Ward Krishak League. Shortly after the arrest, allegations surfaced that the officer released Matin Mia in exchange for a payment of 200,000 taka from the detainee’s family. Following his release, Matin Mia reportedly went into hiding.

The incident has triggered further unrest within the community. A local shopkeeper, Nur Mohammad, filed a formal complaint with the police alleging that he was threatened by the detainee’s brother, Alam. According to the complaint, Nur Mohammad had directed officers to Matin Mia’s residence during the police operation, an action that led to subsequent verbal abuse and death threats against him.

Assistant Commissioner of the Konabari zone, Abu Naser Md. Al Amin, confirmed that the matter remains under active investigation. He stated that the decision to withdraw SI Kamrul Hasan was made based on evidence gathered during the initial inquiry. Authorities have indicated that further legal and departmental actions will be taken once the full investigation is concluded.
