Teenager accused of kicking schoolgirl in Sonargaon placed under probation after family mediation

SONARGAON, NARAYANGANJ — Authorities have released a teenager accused of assaulting a schoolgirl in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, placing him under the supervision of a social services probation officer and his family.
The teenager, a native of Rangpur who resides in Narayanganj with his parents, was brought to the Sonargaon police station on Saturday afternoon following his apprehension. The decision to grant him probation followed a meeting at the police station between the families of the victim and the accused. Police confirmed that because the victim’s family declined to file a formal criminal complaint, the teenager was released into his parents’ custody under the guidance of the Department of Social Services.
District Probation Officer Nur Farjana stated that the teenager will undergo mandatory counseling for the next six months to ensure his rehabilitation. During this period, he is required to report to the probation officer two to three times per month alongside his parents.
The incident gained national attention last Thursday after a video circulated on social media platforms, including Facebook and TikTok. The footage shows the schoolgirl walking along a walkway by the Shitalakshya River when she is kicked from behind by the teenager. When the victim attempted to protest, the youth assaulted her a second time. Following the public outcry, local residents had initially apprehended the teenager, forcing him to perform squats while holding his ears and issue a public apology.
Controversy has since emerged regarding the school’s potential expulsion of the victim. The teenager’s family alleged that the Kanchpur Omar Ali High School authorities threatened the girl with a Transfer Certificate (TC) following the incident. Acting Headmaster Abdul Matin Prodhan denied that the decision was finalized, stating that a show-cause notice was issued to the victim’s family to address concerns regarding the school’s reputation and general indiscipline. He described the talk of a transfer certificate as a measure intended to exert pressure on the family, noting that a final decision would be reached following discussions with the school managing committee and local stakeholders.
Atiqur Rahman, the acting district education officer, stated that he has initiated a formal inquiry into the school’s handling of the matter.
