Sundarbans Coast Guard Raid Results in Criminal Charges Against Notorious Gang Leaders

Authorities have filed multiple criminal charges against the leaders and members of the “Dulabhai Bahini,” an alleged pirate group operating within the Sundarbans, following a violent encounter with the Coast Guard. The cases, which include counts of murder, attempted murder, obstruction of government duty, and violations of the Arms Act, were registered at Koyra Police Station based on a formal complaint filed by Coast Guard Petty Officer Ariful Islam.
The confrontation began late Thursday night near the Beshokhali area of the Sundarbans, along the Arhuashibsa River. According to Coast Guard officials, personnel encountered the armed group during a special operation and were forced to return fire after the suspects initiated an exchange of gunfire. The skirmish lasted until Friday morning, resulting in the death of one individual, identified as 64-year-old Sakat Sardar, and the seizure of six single-barrel guns, 69 live cartridges, and other equipment.

Conflicting accounts regarding the deceased have emerged. While Coast Guard reports suggest the casualties were members of the criminal group, family members of Sakat Sardar claim he was a fisherman who had been kidnapped by the pirates for ransom several days prior. The discovery of the body has raised questions, particularly as fishing is currently prohibited in the Sundarbans due to the spawning season. Koyra police have sent the body to Khulna Medical College Hospital for an autopsy to clarify the circumstances of his death.
Two primary suspects—identified by police as the group’s leader, Rabiul Islam, and member Israfil Hawladar—were taken into custody with gunshot wounds. Rabiul Islam, who reportedly formed the “Dulabhai Bahini” in 2024 following the death of his brother-in-law, a former pirate leader, is currently receiving medical treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital. Israfil Hawladar was apprehended in the Baburabad area and is also undergoing treatment.

In the formal case document, the Coast Guard stated that the exchange of fire resulted in injuries to two of their own personnel and significant damage to a patrol speed boat valued at approximately 500,000 taka. To quell the resistance, officials reported discharging 216 rounds of ammunition. Following the firefight, a dive team recovered additional evidence, including ammunition casings and personal items from the scene.
Local forest department officials have confirmed that the situation in the Sundarbans is now under control. A.Z.M. Hashanur Rahman, the Divisional Forest Officer for the Western Sundarbans, stated that surveillance has been increased with three patrol teams deployed to the area, working in close coordination with the Coast Guard to ensure stability and prevent further criminal activity. Police continue to conduct operations to track down remaining suspects.
