Police in Patuakhali have registered a case against Shahidul Islam, the president of the Sadar Upazila Youth Jamaat-e-Islami, following allegations of rape and forced termination of pregnancy. The case was formally recorded on Wednesday at the Patuakhali Sadar Police Station following a direct order from the Patuakhali Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.

The legal action stems from a complaint filed on July 22 by a 28-year-old widow. According to the court filing, the woman, who lives with her child, alleged that Islam—the son of Abul Kalam from Itbaria Union—frequently visited her home and eventually proposed marriage after she initially rejected his advances.

The victim claims that under the pretense of finalizing wedding arrangements, Islam moved her to his sister’s residence in the district town. She alleges that he engaged in a sexual relationship with her on March 24. When she later became pregnant, she says Islam took her to a doctor under the guise of a routine checkup, where he administered medication to terminate the pregnancy against her will. The complainant stated that when she subsequently demanded he honor his marriage promise, he refused.

According to Patuakhali Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Moniruzzaman, the police formally initiated the investigation after receiving the court’s written directive on Wednesday afternoon. Officials confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the appropriate legal steps against the accused.

Efforts to reach Islam for comment were unsuccessful, as his mobile phone remained switched off. Regarding the allegations, District Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Nazmul Ahsan stated that the organization would refrain from intervening while the legal process is ongoing. He added that if the court finds Islam guilty, the party will take necessary disciplinary measures against him.
