Students beat local party official after exam hall confrontation in Faridpur

Students at a secondary school examination center in Bhanga, Faridpur, staged a protest and temporarily boycotted their practical exams Thursday following an altercation with a local political leader who allegedly assaulted and verbally abused them.
The incident occurred at the Kazi Shamsunnesa Girls’ High School during the Biology practical examination. According to witnesses, Mohammad Ashraf Hossain, a 28-year-old convenor of the local National Citizen Party (NCP), entered the school premises to assist his fiancée, who was taking her Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exams at the center.
Students reported that Hossain had been regularly entering the center on previous exam days to provide unauthorized assistance to his fiancée. Tensions escalated Thursday morning when fellow examinees, including student Sajid Islam, confronted Hossain over his presence in the exam hall. Witnesses stated that Hossain responded by using his political affiliation to intimidate, verbally abuse, and physically assault the students.
In retaliation, a group of examinees staged a protest, demanding the immediate arrest of the politician. The unrest forced a delay in the examination schedule, which resumed approximately 90 minutes behind the intended start time. During the confrontation, students pursued Hossain, throwing bricks at him. In the ensuing chaos, the school’s headmaster, Arun Chandra Datta, and at least one student sustained injuries from flying debris.
Hossain sought refuge in the center secretary’s office, where he was held until local law enforcement arrived to restore order. Police eventually secured the premises and took the NCP leader into custody.
Bhanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman confirmed the detention, noting that the incident stemmed from Hossain’s frequent, unauthorized access to the exam center to escort his fiancée. He stated that the situation was brought under control after the intervention of police officers.
Hossain, however, denied the allegations of misconduct. He claimed that he was targeted by a group of student activists who, he alleged, had been harassing his fiancée. He maintained that he was acting in defense of his partner when he was confronted by the group.
