Shots targeting ambulances in Khulna: past enmity or dominance

Raju Howladar (38), a youth shot under arrest warrant in Khulna Nagar, has improved in his physical condition. He is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. However, there was no case till this Wednesday morning regarding the allegation that he was first shot and then shot at the ambulance on the way to Dhaka.
This has been confirmed by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Saltachara police station, Syed Mosharef Hossain. He told Prothom Alo this morning that Raju’s physical condition is better than before. He is undergoing treatment in Dhaka and the capital police are on duty there. No case has yet been filed in the shooting incident. However, legal matters are pending.

The OC said that while Raju was being taken to Dhaka under police guard, the shooting happened at the ambulance in the dark of night. An investigation has been started in this regard. Nothing can be said clearly without investigation. Whether the incident occurred due to prior enmity, dominance, or an internal conflict within a criminal gang is being looked at seriously. There is no opportunity to underestimate the matter.
According to police and local sources, Raju Howladar was shot in the stomach in the area adjacent to the Koba Mosque of Saltachara police station in the city on Monday. He was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital with serious injuries. However, there is no definite information about when and how he was shot.

According to the police, Raju is a resident of Shipyard area of Saltachara police station. There are several cases against him in different districts of the country including murder, robbery. There are arrest warrants against him in four cases at Saltachara police station.
When Raju’s physical condition deteriorated, he was sent to Dhaka for better treatment last Monday around 12:30 pm. At that time, when the ambulance reached Kudir Battala area of Rupsa Upazila, there was a complaint of firing at it.
Zafar Ahmed, OC of Katakhali Highway Police Station, said that when a team of Saltachara Police Station arrived in Battala area of Kudir on the way to Dhaka in an ambulance, they heard that someone fired at it. Later they were contacted for additional security. After that, the ambulance was taken through the police station area with police security. No one was injured in the incident. They could not be sure whether the bullets hit the ambulance or not. They only asked for security at night, which the police provided.
