Shopkeeper stabbed to death in Rajshahi, van driver arrested

A grocer was stabbed to death in Puthia upazila of Rajshahi. The incident took place in the council market of Puthia Municipality at around 6:30 am on Friday. After that, a van driver named Mainul Islam (23), who was the attacker, was beaten and handed over to the police by the local people.
The deceased Mamunur Rashid alias Jeweler (48) lives in Krishnapur village of the upazila. He has a grocery store in Council Bazar. Mainul Islam (23), son of Kamal Hossain of Kanthalbaria village of the upazila, was detained on charges of assault. He is a van driver by profession.
According to police and local sources, Mamunur Rashid was sitting inside after opening the shop this morning. At that time Mainul entered the shop of Kanthalbaria village and tried to take money from his cash box. A fight started between the two. At one stage of the scuffle, Mainul hit Mamunur in the chest with a knife he had. When Mamunu collapsed in a bloody state, the people around rescued him and took him to the Puthia Upazila Health Complex. The doctor on duty declared him dead after the initial examination.
Soon after the incident, the local crowd chased Mainul and arrested him. The agitated crowd beat him and tied him to the pole of the shop. On receiving the information, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Puthia Police Station arrived at the spot and rescued Mainul from the mob and took him into police custody.
Accused Mainul’s father Kamal Hossain said that his mother died a year after the birth of his son. Grandparents have become people. Married after reaching adulthood. But the wife left due to drug addiction and torture. Filed a dowry case in court. He has prepared to pay the dowry by selling the vita. He sold the land and bought his son a van. The van has not been found since Thursday. When I asked my son, he said that it was kept near the tea shop, but it was lost. In the morning, he overheard Mamunur Rashid breaking into the shop and taking money from the cash box.
Puthia Police Station OC Faridul Islam said that local people had tied Mainul to a pole. He was later taken into police custody. The angry crowd beat him up. He has been sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for treatment. For this, he has not yet been given the opportunity to interrogate him closely. The body has been sent to Rajshahi Medical College morgue for post-mortem.
