Severe weather forces flight diversions and delays at Chittagong airport

Severe weather and torrential rainfall crippled flight operations at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram on Tuesday, forcing multiple aircraft to divert and causing widespread scheduling delays. Airport officials confirmed that three flights were unable to land at the facility due to hazardous conditions, including heavy gusts that reached speeds of 80 to 90 kilometers per hour.
A US-Bangla Airlines flight arriving from Abu Dhabi and an Air Arabia flight from Sharjah were diverted to Dhaka after failing to secure a landing in Chattogram. Additionally, a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight originating from Dhaka was forced to return to the capital when it could not complete its approach to the coastal city.

Public relations officer Ibrahim Khalil stated that while all scheduled outbound flights from Chattogram were able to depart, the majority of both incoming and outgoing services experienced delays ranging from 30 minutes to one hour.
The disruption follows a period of extreme precipitation, with the Patenga Meteorological Office recording 386.8 millimeters of rainfall in the 24 hours leading up to Tuesday noon. Under meteorological standards, any rainfall exceeding 88 millimeters in a single day is categorized as “very heavy,” underscoring the severity of the weather system currently affecting the region.
