Schoolgirl expelled after viral video shows her being assaulted in Sonargaon

A video depicting a schoolgirl being physically assaulted in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, has triggered widespread public outrage after circulating on Facebook and TikTok this Thursday. The footage shows a girl in school uniform walking along the Shitalakshya River walkway when she is kicked from behind by an 11-and-a-half-year-old boy. When the victim attempts to protest, the boy kicks her a second time.
Investigations reveal the incident occurred approximately one month ago. The victim, a fourth-grade student at Omar Ali High School in Kanchpur, was walking near the river with a seventh-grade classmate when the assault took place. An associate of the attacker recorded the incident on a mobile phone, and the footage only surfaced publicly this week.
Following the viral spread of the video, a second clip emerged showing the young assailant being forced to perform sit-ups while holding his ears during a local mediation session. In this video, the boy admits to kicking the girl, apologizes for his actions, and declares his intention to leave the Kanchpur area.
Despite the victim being the target of the assault, school authorities have issued a Transfer Certificate (TC) to her, effectively expelling her for wandering outside the school premises during class hours. The victim’s father, a garment factory worker, confirmed that school officials held a hearing regarding the matter and subsequently dismissed his daughter. He stated that he is now forced to seek admission for her at a different institution, noting that he is unaware of any formal disciplinary action taken against the attacker.
The school’s headmaster defended the decision, stating that the school committee reached a consensus to issue the TC to the two students involved. He noted that because the incident occurred outside the school grounds, local residents had already intervened to handle the matter.
Law enforcement has taken note of the viral footage. Inspector (Investigation) Md. Anwar Hossain of Sonargaon Police Station stated that while the authorities are aware of the incident, no formal complaint has been filed by the victim’s family. Police have initiated an investigation and have pledged to take appropriate legal action.
