Satkhira Police Officer Withdrawn Following Viral Video of Detained Awami League Leader from Custody

Satkhira police authorities have withdrawn Officer-in-Charge (OC) Masudur Rahman and transferred two other duty officers following the viral circulation of a video showing a detained politician inside the Satkhira Sadar Police Station holding cell. The incident, which triggered public outcry, prompted district police leadership to reassign the officials to the Police Lines and other stations on Monday night.
The controversy centers on an 18-second video clip featuring Alamgir Hossain, the general secretary of the district Tati League, recorded while he was in custody. Hossain was among four political figures arrested last Saturday morning during a police operation in Satkhira town. The other detainees include Kazi Aktar Hossain, the organizing secretary of the district Awami League; Shafiqul Islam, a member of the Kaliganj Upazila Awami League; and Sheikh Mostafizur Rahman, the former president of the now-prohibited municipal unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League.
Preliminary reports indicate that a visitor managed to bypass police oversight on August 15 to film the detainees using a mobile phone. A police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the incident was captured by the station’s closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras.
Following the circulation of the video, which drew sharp criticism regarding security lapses at the station, the local wing of the Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal organized a protest at New Market square on Monday afternoon demanding the removal and punishment of the OC.
In the wake of the administrative reshuffle, Inspector (Investigation) Shahedur Rahman has assumed temporary command of the Sadar Police Station. Confirming the transfers, he stated that Duty Officer Pinki Roy has been reassigned to Shyamnagar Police Station, while Assistant Duty Officer Aniva Khatun has been moved to Kaliganj Police Station.
Satkhira Superintendent of Police Abu Saleh Mohammad Ashraful Alam addressed the transfers during a briefing, characterizing them as routine administrative measures rather than a direct disciplinary response to the video. However, he acknowledged the gravity of the security breach, confirming that an investigation is underway to determine if any police personnel were negligent in allowing the recording to take place.
