Rohingya man shot by Arakan Army flees across Naf River to Bangladesh

A 28-year-old Rohingya refugee was hospitalized on Saturday after sustaining gunshot wounds during an encounter with the Arakan Army inside Myanmar. The victim, identified as Md. Ayub, managed to swim across the Naf River to reach the Bangladeshi border despite his injuries, where he was eventually rescued and provided medical care.

Ayub, a resident of Block A-4 at the Thainkhali refugee camp in Ukhiya, reportedly crossed the border into Myanmar on Friday to fish. According to his account provided to border officials, he traveled approximately five kilometers into the Bogardia region of Myanmar before being intercepted by members of the Arakan Army. The insurgents opened fire, striking him during the confrontation.

The injured man eventually surfaced near the Chotabil border outpost under the jurisdiction of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) 64th Battalion at approximately 8:50 a.m. Saturday. Local residents, acting in coordination with BGB personnel, assisted in transporting him to the Kutupalong MSF Hospital for urgent treatment.

Lieutenant Colonel Zahirul Islam, commander of the BGB 64th Battalion, confirmed the incident to the media on Saturday afternoon. Authorities continue to monitor the border region as tensions persist in the area adjacent to the Ukhiya frontier.
