Rights Group Condemns Recent Interference in Cultural Events Across Bangladesh

Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), a prominent human rights organization, has issued a formal statement expressing deep concern and strong condemnation over the recent suppression of cultural activities in Bangladesh. The group specifically cited the forced cancellation of a screening of the film “Bonolata Express” in Brahmanbaria and the disruption of a scheduled Baul music performance in the Madan upazila of Netrokona.
In its statement, the organization asserted that the state holds a constitutional mandate to protect the rights of all citizens to participate in cultural life and express themselves freely. ASK urged the government to take immediate, exemplary action to prevent future interference, emphasizing that state institutions must maintain an active and impartial stance to safeguard cultural diversity and freedom of expression.

The human rights group underscored that while citizens maintain the democratic right to hold differing opinions or criticisms regarding artistic performances, the use of intimidation, coercion, or illegal influence to shut down lawful cultural activities is entirely unacceptable. Such tactics, according to the organization, pose a significant threat to the nation’s social fabric.
The statement concluded by warning that these patterns of suppression extend beyond the individual events they target. By stifling artistic expression, such actions undermine long-term cultural tolerance, pluralism, and the democratic values essential to a healthy society. ASK has called upon authorities to ensure the security of all cultural gatherings moving forward.
