Ransom Paid for Release of Abducted Child at Cox’s Bazar Rohingya Camp

A five-year-old boy has been reunited with his family after being abducted from the Balukhali Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, as local authorities continue their pursuit of the remaining members of a criminal kidnapping ring.
The child, Rahmat Ali, was abducted on July 22 while at Camp-11. According to police, the kidnappers circulated a video on social media depicting the boy being threatened with death, using the footage to demand a ransom of 600,000 taka from his father, Mohammad Junaid.

Cox’s Bazar District Police spokesperson and Additional Superintendent of Police, Ohidur Rahman, confirmed the recovery at a press briefing on Wednesday. He stated that the family, fearing for the child’s safety, initially bypassed law enforcement to negotiate directly with the abductors. Following extensive communication, the ransom was settled at 320,000 taka. The funds were transferred through various mobile financial service accounts as instructed by the kidnappers, leading to the child’s eventual release.
Acting on intelligence, police conducted an operation in the Rohingya camp early Wednesday morning, resulting in the arrest of 37-year-old Mohammad Zakaria. During the briefing, officials noted that Zakaria is being interrogated to identify other individuals involved in the syndicate.

The suspect has since been remanded to judicial custody, while the child remains under the care of his family. Law enforcement officials have launched a wider operation to apprehend the remaining perpetrators and dismantle the criminal network responsible for the incident.
