Florida Murder Victim to be Buried in Hometown Yard After Evening Prayer Service

The body of Jamil Ahmed Limon, a Bangladeshi PhD student murdered in Florida, arrived in his ancestral village of Madarganj in Jamalpur district on Monday, where grieving relatives and neighbors gathered from early morning. Following a funeral prayer after Maghrib, the 27-year-old will be laid to rest in the family graveyard within the compound of his home.
Earlier on Monday, Limon’s remains landed at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 8:47 AM. After completing customs formalities, the vehicle carrying his body departed for Jamalpur around 10:00 AM, with arrival in Madarganj expected by 4:00 PM.

Limon was the elder son of Zahurul Haque, a resident of Mahishbathan in Madarganj upazila’s Koraichara Union. His father’s work had led the family to live in Gazipur’s Maona area for an extended period, where Limon grew up and pursued his studies. He leaves behind a younger brother, Zobayer Hossain. The family had harbored immense hopes for their eldest son, now shattered by profound grief.
A somber silence enveloped the family home in Madarganj on Monday morning. With most family members still in Dhaka, the initial gathering was small, but relatives and neighbors gradually began to arrive. Preparations were underway, with a grave being dug in the family cemetery to the east of the house and a tent erected in the courtyard, furnished with chairs for mourners. Distraught loved ones struggled to come to terms with the young man’s untimely death.

“This gentle and polite boy often told me, ‘Uncle, please pray for me so I can finish my studies and do something for the country; so I can make my parents proud,'” Limon’s uncle, Ziaul Haque, told *Prothom Alo*. “He had promised to return home soon while he was abroad, but he has returned as a lifeless body.” Struggling to control his emotions, he added, “The pain of an uncle having to dig his nephew’s grave is beyond words.”
Ziaul Haque further explained that Limon was beloved by all, and thus the family decided to bury him within their home compound.
Limon, 27, was pursuing a PhD in Geography, Environmental Science, and Policy at the University of South Florida. He was reported missing on April 16, along with Nahida Sultana Bristy, also 27. A friend alerted university authorities to their disappearance.
Hisham Abugharbieh, Limon’s American roommate, was later arrested in connection with the murder from his family home. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office stated that after interrogating Abugharbieh, Limon’s mutilated body was discovered on April 24, discarded in several black garbage bags near the Howard Frankland Bridge area in Florida.
