Rangpur Volunteer Changes Lives Through Grassroots Humanitarian Work

RANGPUR, Bangladesh — What began as a single act of compassion nearly two decades ago has grown into a community-wide humanitarian movement led by Ashikur Rahman, a resident of Khordor Belaichandi village in Taraganj upazila of Rangpur.
Known locally as a “friend of the poor,” Rahman has spent years helping disadvantaged families by providing medical assistance, educational support, and livelihood opportunities through a volunteer organization he founded.

Rahman’s journey into humanitarian work began after he encountered a middle-aged day laborer crying in a local market because he could not afford medical treatment.
After learning about the man’s condition, Rahman arranged for his admission to a hospital and paid for the surgery. The man’s gratitude after recovering inspired him to dedicate his life to serving those in need.

Following the completion of his MBA degree in 2016, Rahman continued his professional career while expanding his social work.
In 2012, he established Grameen Sahajjo Songstha, a volunteer-based organization that now has more than 150 members working to reduce poverty, improve literacy, and provide emergency assistance to vulnerable people.
Over the years, the organization has helped numerous low-income families become financially self-reliant by providing sewing machines, livestock, and financial support for small-scale poultry farming.
Among the beneficiaries is Rehena Khatun, a widow who lost her husband in a road accident. With support from the organization, she now earns a steady income through tailoring and livestock rearing.
Another beneficiary, Majeda Begum, who previously struggled to provide food for her family, has established a small poultry farm with assistance from the organization.
In addition to livelihood support, the organization operates a healthcare assistance program that provides monthly financial aid to patients who cannot afford treatment.
According to the organization, more than 150 patients have received specialized medical assistance through its health initiatives.
The group also places significant emphasis on education. It runs an adult literacy center for elderly learners and has distributed educational materials to more than 200 students from underprivileged families.
A social committee comprising teachers, religious leaders, and local representatives works alongside the organization to address community issues, including child marriage.
The committee says it has successfully prevented four child marriages and provided financial assistance for the weddings of 18 women from financially disadvantaged families.
The organization finances its activities through monthly contributions from its members and additional income generated from community-based fish farming projects.
Local leaders have praised the initiative for its lasting impact on the community.
Union Parishad Chairman Rabiul Islam said Rahman’s dedication to serving the poor is an inspiring example of selfless community service.
Rahman said his commitment to humanitarian work was inspired by his father, Aziz Sardar, who taught him that serving humanity is one of life’s greatest responsibilities.
Today, Grameen Sahajjo Songstha continues to expand its activities, providing hope and practical support to hundreds of families across the Taraganj area.
