Rajshahi agro firm managing director arrested over multi-million taka fraud scheme

Rajshahi police have arrested Aminul Islam, the managing director of Mahananda Agrocare Ltd., following allegations of widespread check fraud and financial embezzlement. Officers from the Boalia Model Police Station took Islam into custody late Wednesday night from his rented residence in the city’s Uposhahar neighborhood.
The arrest follows a similar legal action against the company’s chairwoman, Jesmin Ara Khatun, who is Islam’s wife. She was apprehended by police on April 12 and is currently released on bail. The couple is accused of soliciting large sums of money from residents in Rajshahi and neighboring districts under the guise of offering business partnerships and lucrative dividends.

According to victims, the couple systematically defrauded investors by providing falsified contract documents and checks. When investors sought returns or the recovery of their principal investments, they reported being met with threats of litigation rather than payment. As a result, at least nine separate criminal cases involving check fraud and misappropriation have been filed against the couple in courts across Rajshahi, Natore, Jashore, and Bogura.
The company’s headquarters, located in the B-327 facility of the local industrial park, now sits abandoned. The property owner has reportedly issued a legal notice against the couple due to the ongoing disputes.

Legal proceedings took a complex turn following Khatun’s initial arrest. After securing bail by providing a formal undertaking to settle outstanding debts, she filed a counter-suit against several victims, alleging an attempted murder. She claimed that on April 11, she was assaulted by a group of individuals, naming Alamgir Kabir as the prime suspect. Kabir, who has filed multiple fraud cases against the couple for checks totaling 41 lakh taka, was one of seven people named in her complaint.
However, investigators have cast doubt on the veracity of the assault claims. The police officer in charge of the initial arrest, Sub-Inspector Monirul Islam, confirmed that no physical injuries were observed on Khatun when she was taken into custody on the night of April 12. Medical records from the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where she was briefly taken for assessment, did not document signs of an assault.
While acknowledging that he had accepted money from investors for business purposes, Aminul Islam claimed prior to his arrest that the accusations were exaggerated. He alleged that the plaintiffs were no longer interested in the business venture and that he had been in the process of repaying them when the litigation began. He further contended that the figures cited in the check fraud cases had been intentionally inflated by the complainants.
