Rajbari Court Orders Imprisonment of Nurse Following Dowry Lawsuit

A court in Baliakandi, Rajbari, ordered a nurse to be sent to jail on Tuesday after denying her bail plea in a dowry case filed by her husband. The accused, 22-year-old Tania Khatun, appeared before the Baliakandi Cognizance Court this morning to seek bail, but the judge remanded her into custody.

Sub-Inspector Subir Kumar Karmakar of the Rajbari Court Police confirmed that the accused was transferred to prison following the court’s directive. Beyond the dowry case, Tania Khatun is reportedly facing two additional legal proceedings involving allegations of terminating a pregnancy and misappropriation of funds.

The complainant, Sakhawat Hossain, a resident of Binodpur village in Rajbari Sadar, alleged that the couple married with family consent. Tania, who works as a nurse at a private hospital in Dhaka, reportedly began demanding 500,000 taka in dowry shortly after the marriage. According to the lawsuit, Tania left her husband’s home and moved back to her father’s residence in Khalkula village after her demands were not met.

The plaintiff’s counsel, Golam Mostafa, stated that the court had previously issued an arrest warrant following an investigation. Although the accused had initially surrendered and secured bail with a commitment to resume marital life, subsequent mediation attempts—including those facilitated by Legal Aid—failed to reconcile the couple. The court denied the bail renewal after it became clear that the accused refused to return to her husband.

Sakhawat Hossain filed the case under Section 3 of the Dowry Prohibition Act of 2018. The law stipulates that a person who demands, either directly or indirectly, any dowry from the other party in a marriage commits a punishable offense, carrying a sentence of one to five years in prison, a fine of up to 50,000 taka, or both.

Speaking to reporters, Sakhawat expressed his disappointment, noting that despite multiple social and local arbitration attempts, the marital dispute remained unresolved. He stated that he had sought legal intervention as a last resort and maintains full confidence in the judicial process.

Fatema Begum, the mother of the accused, disputed the allegations of financial misconduct and claimed that the family was unaware of the scheduled court appearance until after the remand order was issued.
