International Crimes Tribunal orders surrender notice for 13 suspects in Savar student killing case

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 has ordered the publication of notices in newspapers requiring 13 individuals, including former Member of Parliament Muhammad Saiful Islam, to surrender in connection with a crimes against humanity case. The charges relate to the killing of student Shaikh Ashhabul Yamin, who was thrown from an armored personnel carrier (APC) by police during the July mass uprising in Savar. The tribunal scheduled the next hearing for the case on September 7.
The court-ordered notices must also be issued for several former law enforcement and local government officials. These include the former Deputy Inspector General of the Dhaka Range, Syed Nurul Islam; former Dhaka District Superintendent of Police Md. Asaduzzaman; former Savar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Shahjaman; and former Inspector A F M Sayed.
Other individuals named in the surrender order include former Savar Upazila Chairman Manjurul Alam Rajib, former Savar Upazila Chhatra League President Md. Atiqur Rahman, former Tetuljhora Union Chairman Fakhrul Alam Samar, Savar Upazila Awami League member Mehedi Hasan Tushar, the former personal secretary to the Savar Upazila Chairman Md. Raju Ahmed, Bangaon Union Awami League President Md. Farid, former Savar Upazila Chhatra League Vice President Zaman Khan, and Sharaf Ashraful Alam.
Meanwhile, six other accused individuals who are currently in custody were formally arrested in connection with this case on Tuesday and remanded to prison. They are former Dhaka District Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Abdullahil Kafi, former Savar Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Shahidur Islam, former Assistant Sub-Inspector Mohammad Ali, former Nayek Md. Suhel Mia, former Constable Md. Mahfuz Mia, and former Dhaka District Jubo League Convener Md. Mizanur Rahman.
Shaikh Ashhabul Yamin was killed during the student-led movement in Savar on July 18, 2024. A viral video circulated on social media captured the moment Yamin was dragged from the top of a police armored vehicle and thrown to the ground. Yamin was a fourth-year Computer Science and Engineering student at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) in Dhaka. He resided at the MIST Osmani Hall and was a resident of the Bank Town area in Savar.
